There’s a Bonus… Curated List of Must-Have Apps If you’ve used Spotlight before and wish it could do a little bit more, then a third-party launcher is just what you need. It gives you a great jumping off point for controlling your Mac from your keyboard. You can even trigger spotlight on your iPad with the same Command + Space shortcut on an external keyboard.Īnd honestly, if you’ve never used a launcher on your Mac before, then Spotlight is the place to start. ![]() In addition to applications, Spotlight can also help you find files and give you suggestions, and it’s built-in to every single Mac out-of-the-box. Spotlight uses autocomplete to help you find the right application fast, then just hit the Enter key to launch it without having to navigate to the Applications folder. Just hit Command + Space on any Mac and start typing the name of the app you want to run. You many not realize it, but your Mac already has a built-in launcher with Spotlight in macOS. What is a Keyboard AppLauncher Anyway?Ī keyboard launcher is an application that helps you open, find, and organize files and apps on your computer - usually using your keyboard. In our testing, two serious contenders emerged ( Alfred and LaunchBar) and both are great applications that can seriously improve your Mac productivity.Īlfred is our favorite because of a couple of design choices we prefer, a more consistent update schedule, and the the ability to extend functionality (without needing to know a scripting language) using custom workflows. Within a second, the clipboard contents (as long as it's text) is appended to the end of the scratch file. There are really only a couple of serious contenders to consider when selecting a macOS launcher, but that doesn’t mean the decision is any easier. Start typing the name of the script (Clipboard to Scratch) and hit return. So to use this script from LaunchBar, I copy some text to the clipboard and then CMD-SPACE to access LaunchBar. I've created a custom list in the LaunchBar index where I manually add the scripts I create. It's particularly easy to create AppleScripts for LaunchBar if you don't need to pass parameters. To create the LaunchBar action, I saved the above AppleScript to a folder I keep on Dropbox for LaunchBar scripts. I also decided to make a LaunchBar action out of the command. The first thing I did was make a new Keyboard Maestro macro out of this. The second pbpaste command pipes the current clipboard entry to the end of the text file. The first echo command adds a newline to the end of the file. Pbpaste > '/Volumes/Macintosh HD 2/Dropbox/Notes/qqq_Scratch.txt'" It's really just a shell script:ĭo shell script "echo > '/Volumes/Macintosh HD 2/Dropbox/Notes/qqq_Scratch.txt' I was pasting a bunch of info back and forth to it the other day and suddenly realized I could quickly make a macro to do the job. I also pin the file to the top of my Simplenote list. I don't have many files that start with "qqq" but a scratch file needs to be available as soon as I open my notes. The file is titled "qqq_Scratch.txt" after Merlin's trick. If it's something I might need later, then I better get it into something a bit more permanent. My clipboard is pretty volatile since I have a number of macros and scripts that temporarily hold bits of information on the clipboard. It's not meant to be permanent just a stop-over to some other destination. I use it to keep random bits of information that I want to out live the clipboard. I keep a scratch file in my NVAlt library. ![]()
